Carson and Douglas J. Moo wrote that "most modern scholars do not think that the apostle Peter wrote this letter. Indeed, for no other letter in the New Testament is there a greater consensus that the person who is named as the author could not, in fact, be the author."[14] The questions of authorship and date are closely related. Self-evidently if Peter the Apostle wrote this epistle then it must have been written prior to his death in c 65-67AD. Many scholars generally consider the epistle to be written between c 100-150AD[15] and so contend that it is pseudepigraphical. For an argument for a late date see Harris[16]. For a 'middle date' see Bauckham who opts for a date between 80-90AD as most probable[17]. For an early date and (usually) for a defense of the Apostle Peter's authorship see Kruger [18], Zahn[19], Spitta[20], Bigg[21], and Green[22].
=============
2nd Peter: Most Christian conservatives accept Peter as the author. However, there is a consensus among liberals that he could not have written the epistle. The book refers to the book of Jude, which was written too late to have been known by Peter. The book also refers to the writings of Paul as "scriptures." This term was not applied to Paul's writings until long after Peter's death. Also, the author supports the belief that Jesus' second coming was in the immediate future. He criticizes the increasing doubt about the imminence of the second coming within the Christian community - a problem that only materialized long after Peter's death. The author stresses the importance of correct knowledge in order to grow in faith: knowledge that Jesus would be returning at any moment, and knowledge of how to conduct godly lives. He also wants to warn Christians of the dangers of false teachings by "lawless men.". He mentioned that false teachers can be identified by their "pride, immorality, sensuality, and deceptiveness." 4 These beliefs are found throughout history: branding individuals who hold different religious beliefs as sinful, immoral people. ============

It seems that we have been duped, that in fact the apostle Peter did not write that letter. But the most profound truth I gleaned from the article was the realization of how thankful I am that I am pursuing historical theology and not biblical studies.
============== The author of Saint Peter’s Second Epistle was not Saint Peter, at least according to the American Council of Catholic Bishops.
